When is a warehouse obsolete?

When does a building have no current value as a storage or distribution facility? Let's look at an example of how the value of a warehouse building can be almost completely destroyed. Then, we will consider some examples of ageless buildings. We will examine the notion that cross-docking can only be performed in a building specifically designed for that purpose. Finally, we will find out how technology can make an old building young again.

Suppliers, distributors ready for another harsh winter

For states in the northern half of the country, particularly the Midwest and Northeast, tough winters are expected. Prolonged freezing temperatures and heavy snowfalls rarely catch anyone off guard in those regions. Even so, not many were ready for what Mother Nature brought last winter. Extended periods of below-zero temperatures and wintry conditions pushing south into unprepared states caused havoc in the energy and transportation grids.

FTR: Heavy-duty rig orders seen surpassing 40,000 units in December

Preliminary net orders of heavy-duty rigs in December surpassed 40,000 units for the second consecutive month, only the third time in nearly nine years that net truck orders exceeded the 40,000-unit level in back-to-back months, consultancy FTR said. According to FTR, net orders — defined as orders minus cancellations — for North American rigs totaled 40,560 units in December. The November total was 45,795 units.

3/4 of buyers innovate by outsourcing

More than three-quarters of buyers have achieved business innovation through outsourcing, according to a survey. The study, conducted by consulting and benchmarking firm Aecus, also found more than 8 in 10 believed their current outsourcing suppliers "actively encourage innovation and ideas."
