Which behaviors must leaders avoid?
Harvard Business Review
From May 28: If you want to empower, engage or motivate others, don't just focus on increasing your positive behaviors. Pay attention to what you need to stop doing as well. Why? Because people remember the bad more than the good.

Conquer the dock's top 3 hazards
Material Handling & Logistics
From Oct. 17: Looking at safety statistics, it's easy to conclude that the loading dock is one of the most hazardous areas of your operations. A quarter of all accidents occur there. The majority of these accidents result in the dreaded back injury that, according to OHSA, ultimately ends up costing U.S. companies upwards of $80 billion annually.

How to reward your stellar team
Harvard Business Review
From Aug. 1: You've been told that getting the most from your team depends on rewarding and recognizing them collectively. But it's tough to do that, especially when most management systems are so focused on individual performance, undermining the very teamwork you're hoping to encourage. Luckily, you don't have to overhaul your company's evaluation process or pay structure. As a team manager, you can support the right behaviors with things that are in your control.

From Sept. 17: A recent survey on the future of warehousing and distribution found that among many other data points, logistics managers want to take greater advantage of "task interleaving." Lean your warehouse workforce
DC Velocity
From May 28: Warehouse and distribution center managers spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to handle the greatest amount of product in as little time as possible, with the highest level of service, and at the lowest possible cost. Management is (still) not leadership
Harvard Business Review
From Jan. 9: Management is a set of well-known processes, like planning, budgeting, structuring jobs, staffing jobs, measuring performance and problem-solving, which help an organization to predictably do what it knows how to do well. Management helps you to produce products and services as you have promised, of consistent quality, on budget, day after day, week after week. In organizations of any size and complexity, this is an enormously difficult task. We constantly underestimate how complex this task really is, especially if we are not in senior management jobs. So, management is crucial — but it's not leadership. Leadership is entirely different.

Finding probable cause may be a DC manager's biggest challenge
Supply Chain Digest
From May 15: Distribution centers are typically, busy, noisy and often chaotic environments to work in. DC managers are always on the lookout for problems (actual and perceived). They must be ready to make operational and/or systematic changes as may be required to "fix" a problem or satisfy new business requirement. One of the challenges they must overcome is similar to the so called "fog-of-war" syndrome that we often hear about from military leaders. Before any corrective action can be taken there must be a clear understanding of the issues.
