Anita Sarkeesian named one of TIME magazine's Top 100 — makes us reflect on female fashions in video games
Bustle
In today's news, a certain 100 humans are being celebrated thanks to a publication known as TIME, amongst them Anita Sarkeesian in TIME Magazine's Most Influential People. And for very good reason. With help from a crowdfunding campaign, the Canadian American feminist public speaker released a series of videos "Tropes vs. Women in Video Games," which will soon be part of her video Web series, Feminist Frequency. The website of the same name tells readers that Feminist Frequency "explores the representations of women in pop culture narratives" and informs us that it's a nonprofit charity with videos ready to watch for free on YouTube.

Survey: Video game hardware sales plummeted in March
CNET
Has everyone who wants a new video game console finally gotten one? That's the question facing the video game industry after new hardware sales in the U.S. fell by more than 20 percent both in March and earlier, in January, according to surveys by industry researcher NPD Group.

Are good video games like novels and films?
Futurity
New research suggests video games aren't getting enough credit. In a study of people's experiences with video games, players indicated that they not only enjoyed playing games, but also that they also frequently appreciated them at a deeper, more meaningful level. These findings should be encouraging to video game developers who want to invest in producing games that examine more meaningful, poignant or contemplative topics.

Novels to video games: Taking the leap
Gamasutra
Pick up a book on writing novels, and a significant number of chapters will be devoted to writing the character arc and pairing it with your world. Protagonist and world (or plot) will in a sense be foils, both uniquely suited to the other and diametrically opposed. The world and the protagonist play off of one another, leading the protagonist to struggle, fail, learn and ultimately, conquer. As one gets down into the guts of the story, working out this interplay can be exquisitely frustrating.

Smartwatch games could be a major force in the industry, as long as developers don't just port smartphone titles to the platform, says Everywear Games. Aki Järvilehto, who is the CEO of the smartwatch developer, told MCV: "We expect 2015 to be the year of smartwatch gaming."

I Make Games — video channel providing female role models in game development
Women in Games International and International Game Developers Association

Research shows that middle school girls are interested in developing video games, but they often lose confidence as they get older. Role models can make a difference. I Make Games is a new campaign sponsored by WIGI and IGDA to provide female role models in game development.

Our goal is to cultivate a YouTube channel that female game developers are continually adding to, with their own stories about game development. We are reaching out to developers, asking them to help seed the channel with videos. Please check out imakegamesproject.com to see the research, and learn how to create your own videos for the channel.

Video games' place in American culture
The Huffington Post
Video games are one of the largest entertainment industries in America. The question is not who plays, but what games, on what device and with whom. In fact, nearly half of the U.S. population — 155 million people — play video games, and 4 out of 5 households own a game-playing device. Overall, video games are a $22.4 billion dollar industry.

Why developers should consider investing in a quality sound engine
Develop
Many engines today handle almost every aspect of development, giving game developers a one-stop shop for their projects. However, some elements can benefit from a more specialized focus, with audio being a prime example. Companies such as Audiokinetic and Firelight Technologies have built their businesses on offering developers comprehensive sound engines, which offer more in-depth features for audio engineers.
