Wyoming Game and Fish faces millions in cuts
The Casper Star-Tribune
For Tom Maechtle, it's not a hard decision: Lack of habitat equals a lack of fish and game. And lack of fish and game means fewer opportunities for sportsmen. Simply leaving things alone won't improve habitat. We've created a landscape that needs help, he said. A wildfire in northeast Wyoming, for example, offers people a choice. We can encourage native plants or leave the rangeland alone and allow invasive species such as cheet grass to move in.

Bighorn sheep success is great, but we're not done
Reno Gazette-Journal
Bighorn sheep, a majestic animal that once thrived in mountain ranges across Nevada, are back. Since the 1960s, the Nevada Department of Wildlife and conservation groups have been working in cooperation to expand the state's bighorn sheep population. The bighorn sheep once numbered in the tens of thousands before humans brought changes that caused the population to crash and nearly disappear from the Silver State.

2nd Colorado lawmaker faces recall effort for gun control vote
Fox News
Less than a week after the Colorado secretary of state's office certified a recall effort against a Colorado lawmaker who supported gun control, a recall petition against a second Democrat who supported the strict gun measures has been deemed sufficient. Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler said that opponents of Sen. Angela Giron, of Pueblo, turned in nearly 13,000 valid signatures to prompt a recall election. They only needed to submit 11,285.

Making water available for wildlife
The Yuma Sun
It is summer and the weather is hot and dry. So dry, in fact, that many wildlife species are stressed by the aridity and lack of available water. Many species like deer, elk and pronghorn are all pregnant and need lots of water when the young are born to help make enough milk to support their young babies. Also, water is critical to digestion in these species.

Passion, instinct, tradition guide local longbow maker
The Daily Independent
You have to rely on instinct to be any good at shooting a long bow, and that's just one of the things bowyer Randy Ackerson appreciates about the traditional tool and weapon. Ackerson, 51, has been building bows since before he moved to Ashland, Ky., about 15 years ago, although his obsession with archery began as a young man. He began hunting small game along with his older brother, Darrell, when he was about 10 years old, Ackerson said.

Graduation gift: Bagging big game
Winfield Daily Courier
Abby Hoffman, who graduated from Udall High School in Kansas, recently got a most unusual graduation present. Her father, Randy, had told her midway through her freshman year that if she could carry a 4.0 grade point average, he would take her on a safari in South Africa. What an incentive. She did and they recently returned home after the 10-day trip.

Taking aim with good vision
By Denise A. Valenti
In a Gallup poll survey, 4 in 10 American citizens reported having a gun in their household with many reporting multiple uses for the guns. The poll showed three main uses: crime protection (67 percent), target shooting (66 percent) and hunting (58 percent). No matter the use, it is important to have optimum visual function in order to achieve maximum safety and the greatest success whether the use is recreational, protection or vocational.
