Bighorn sheep testing shows sick animals without disease

Preliminary survey results by wildlife agencies in the Mojave National Preserve show that a few sick desert bighorn sheep have tested negative for pneumonia, according to an official of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. More than 20 sheep in a herd of about 200 bighorns have died. And multiple carcasess have been confirmed by laboratory tests to have pneumonia, coordinator Regina Abella said.

Montana nearly doubles wolf kill limit for hunters

Montana wildlife officials have approved a measure that nearly doubles the number of wolves a person can kill each year and extends the length of the state’s hunting season, angering conservationists. The plan adopted by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission raises the number of wolves a person can kill in a given calendar year to 10, from the previous limit of six.

FWP in Bozeman auctioning wildlife mounts

Looking for an extra set of antlers or a trophy wild animal to mount on the wall, even if you aren't a hunter? Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will hold a trophy auction on Aug. 10 at 10 a.m. at Region 3 Headquarters in Bozeman, Mont. Items being auctioned range from deer and elk antlers, mounts and hides to trophy bighorn sheep and bison heads, as well as several furs. These came to FWP as a result of statewide investigations and confiscation, department management activities, as well as winter or roadkill.

Nebraska mountain lion hunt

Some Nebraskans are likely to get upset about the announcement that mountain lion hunting will be allowed in Nebraska next year under new regulations approved by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Under the plan, the state would be divided into four management units: The Pine Ridge, Niobrara River valley, Wildcat Hills and the rest of the state. The plan affects mostly the Pine Ridge area, which has an estimated 15 to 22 of the big cats.

Elk, bighorn study continuing in South San Juan Mountains
The Denver Journal
Colorado Parks and Wildlife is continuing its study of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep and elk populations in south central Colorado. As part of the study, the agency plans to capture and place telemetry collars on 20 elk and six bighorns Aug. 5-9.

NRA National Sporting Arms Museum grand opening

The National Rifle Association will celebrate the grand opening of the NRA National Sporting Arms Museum on Aug. 2. The museum is located at the Bass Pro Shops store in Springfield, Mo. More than a thousand guns will be displayed in exhibits including original prototypes and paintings from Remington Arms Co., shotguns from the American Trapshooting Association's Hall of Fame and a full collection of guns from the Pachmayr Foundation.

7 Bighorn Sheep road-killed in West-Central Montana

Region 2 of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has seen a rise in bighorn sheep-vehicle collisions, with seven bighorns killed in recent weeks. The tally includes five along Highway 200 east of Bonner, one in Lower Rock Creek and one on Highway 93 near the East Fork of the Bitterroot.
