As CEOs Seek Tax Cuts, US Senator Slams Corporate Tax Haven Use

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders lashed out at widespread use of offshore tax havens by U.S. companies, and the liberal independent targeted a group that represents CEOs of big corporations and wants corporate taxes lowered. Sanders, top opposition member on the U.S. Senate Budget Committee, released a report decrying what he called "legalized tax fraud."

US Senate Democrat Urges Tax Overhaul to Halt Inversion 'Virus'

The Senate Finance Committee's top Democrat called corporate tax inversions a "virus," saying they threaten to spread unless Washington, D.C., moves quickly to overhaul the U.S. tax code. "The inversion virus may not have been quite as active in the past few weeks," said Sen. Ron Wyden, referring to the deals in which U.S. companies buy smaller, foreign rivals and adopt their legal nationality for corporate tax purposes.

US Sued for Seizure of Tax Refunds to Settle Old Social Security Overpayments

A group of plaintiffs are suing the Department of the Treasury, the Social Security Administration and Washingotn, D.C., claiming the federal government is continuing to hold onto their tax refunds to pay for supposed overpayments of Social Security benefits decades ago. After reports of the seizures emerged last year, the Social Security Administration came under pressure from lawmakers in Congress and announced a halt to the practice.

Wisconsin to Skip Debt Payments to Make Up for Walker's Tax Cuts

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, facing a $283 million deficit that needs to be closed by the end of June, will skip more than $100 million in debt payments to balance the books thrown into disarray by his tax cuts. The move comes as Walker mounts a 2016 bid for the Republican presidential nomination, and while his state is under stress from a projected shortfall that could exceed $2 billion in the two-year budget beginning in July.
