Executive Planning Tax Rate Under 3 Percent Says US Code Hurts

The treasurer of a U.S. company that is projecting a global tax rate of less than 3 percent this year said the country's tax system makes it difficult to compete in overseas markets. Anthony Smith of Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. told the Senate Finance Committee that the U.S. needs to lower the 35 percent corporate tax rate and make it easier for U.S. companies to bring profits home.

IRS Tackles Tax Identity Fraud
The Wall Street Journal
Tax identity theft has been in the news this year, following a surge of fraudulent state-tax refund claims submitted through TurboTax that caused Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, to suspend e-filing for 24 hours in early February. Now, Internal Revenue Service Commissioner John Koskinen has raised the possibility of delaying refunds or speeding up W-2 reporting, or both, so that the agency can better fight fraud.

Investors busily counting companies' mounting cash stashed overseas are missing an important danger: a massive $533 billion potential and tax liability. Hoping to avoid U.S. taxes, Standard & Poor's 500 companies have stashed more than $2 trillion in earnings overseas and at least $690 billion outside the U.S., according to breakthrough new research by well-respected Credit Suisse research analysts David Zion, Ravi Gomatam and Ron Graziano.

Federal Tax System Seen in Need of Overhaul

The public sees the nation's tax system as deeply flawed: 59 percent say "there is so much wrong with the federal tax system that Congress should completely change it." Just 38 percent think the system "works pretty well" and requires "only minor changes." These opinions have changed little since 2011.
