Nebraska cities could raise their sales tax rates as high as 2 percent with voter approval to pay for swimming pools, property tax reductions or other local projects under a measure debated. Sen. Brad Ashford said his bill would help cities compensate for this year's cutbacks in state aid and reduce their dependence on other taxes. More



Hawaii weighs big tax hike despite opposition

A crowd of residents and businesses opposed to raising Hawaii's largest tax told senators it would damage the economy and increase the islands' already high cost of living. The Senate Ways and Means Committee scheduled a vote on hiking the state's general excise tax after hearing three hours of testimony during a public hearing in the Capitol auditorium. More

Gov. Pat Quinn recently added to his reputation as America's most taxing politician by signing a law applying the state's 6.25 percent sales tax to Internet purchases made in Illinois. Within hours, Amazon, the online book and merchandise seller, announced it would discontinue using any of its 9,000 Illinois small business affiliates to avoid having to collect the tax. The Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Jobs Creation Act of 2010 includes a portability provision which permits surviving spouses to elect to use the unused portion of the estate tax applicable exclusion amount of their predeceased spouses. This provides the surviving spouse with a larger exclusion amount and allows married couples to transfer a collective $10 million estate. What's the catch? More
