Lew, Republicans agree on need for tax overhaul

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and Republican lawmakers recently concurred that overhauls of the corporate and individual tax codes should be tackled together, but their agreement ended there. Diverging sharply on whether new federal revenues should be raised from the affluent, Lew and the Republicans left prospects for comprehensive tax reform cloudy amid persistent partisan conflict on Capitol Hill over tax and spending policy.

Federal tax collections to hit record highs
The Washington Times
There's some fine print in President Barack Obama's budget plan, and taxpayers beware: Collections are going to break records in the coming years. The Washington Examiner reported that the Department of Treasury projected business and individual collections at $2.71 trillion for this year — higher than the previous high $2.5 trillion collected in 2007.

Obama proposes tax credit for small businesses

Tax relief for small businesses that hired or gave raises to their workers last year is among the proposals that President Barack Obama revealed in his $3.8 trillion budget plan. Obama's budget message for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1 also contains proposals that would streamline the application process for Small Business Administration loans and increase the number of lenders working with the SBA.

IRS reads taxpayer emails without a warrant
Accounting Today
New documents from the Internal Revenue Service suggest the agency's criminal tax division has been reading taxpayers' emails without a warrant, despite an appeals court decision saying that violates the Fourth Amendment. The 247 pages of documents were released to the American Civil Liberties Union after the ACLU filed a Freedom of Information Act request. The IRS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Taxpayers who lost offshore account amnesty promised fair treatment

The Department of Justice will consider fairness before deciding whether to prosecute taxpayers kicked out of the Internal Revenue Service's criminal amnesty/voluntary disclosure program for holding secret offshore bank accounts, Kathryn Keneally, the assistant attorney general for the tax division, said. In an interview with Forbes, Keneally said that of the 24,000 taxpayers who applied to the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program in 2011 and 2012, only 900 have been denied participation in the program.

The US collects smaller percentage in taxes than most developed countries

While Republicans are quick to pounce on any proposals to raise taxes as a means of stimulating the economy, a new study finds that the U.S. collects a smaller share in taxes than most developed countries. A look at 2010 data reveals that the U.S. is one of the least taxed countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, according to a study released by Citizens For Tax Justice.
