Indirect tax increases trend down this year

The number of indirect tax increases fell from 154 in the first quarter of 2011 to 107 in the first quarter of this year. The latest tax rate report from Thomson Reuters found that the total number of state, county and city sales tax increases in the U.S. declined from 100 to 90, while the number of value-added tax increases globally dropped from 54 to 17. There were 30 percent fewer indirect tax increases reported globally in the first quarter of 2012 than there were during the same period in 2011. More

Supreme Court restrains IRS in tax shelter case

The Supreme Court ruled that the Internal Revenue Service took too much time to try to collect back taxes from a business in a tax shelter case, a decision with wider impact for dozens of related cases. Ruling in favor of Home Concrete & Supply LLC, the business the IRS had been pursuing in a crackdown on Son of Boss tax shelters, the high court said the agency could not use an extended, six-year statute of limitations period. Sales tax deal with Texas is Amazon's latest

Amazon.com has agreed to begin collecting sales tax in Texas, forging a deal that promises to bring more jobs to the southern U.S. state. The agreement, to take effect on July 1 for Texas' 6.25 percent sales tax, follows another accord reached with Nevada to begin collecting that state's 8.1 percent sales tax on Jan. 1, 2014. More



In Alaska, plan to cut oil taxes hits a wall

Oil long has been king in Alaska, but the state's Republican governor is having trouble finding support for a tax break he believes is critical to ensuring it remains so. With a stunning defeat in the state Legislature, Gov. Sean Parnell has failed twice since last year to reduce production taxes on oil companies, a strategy he believes is crucial to bringing in new companies and ensuring those already here invest more and boost production. That would ensure Alaska's financial lifeline remains healthy for years to come. More
