Report: US wants Credit Suisse to plead guilty in tax dispute

U.S. authorities are ratcheting up pressure on Credit Suisse to plead guilty to helping wealthy Americans hide untaxed money in Swiss bank accounts, Swiss newspaper NZZ am Sonntag said. The source quoted by the newspaper said U.S. authorities had made "extreme" demands regarding potential fines and wanted the names of all U.S. citizens who had stashed away untaxed money in Credit Suisse accounts, NZZ am Sonntag said.

Buffett: Congress likely to tackle tax-dodging mergers

VideoBriefWarren Buffett said "you are getting more mergers that are tax driven" and Congress is "likely to address" the issue. In response to a question about Pfizer's bid to buy the foreign drug firm AstraZeneca, partially to reduce its U.S. tax bill by moving overseas, Buffett said the trend "will gather momentum, and my guess is that when you get to companies of this size, of this prominence and with the speedup of momentum, my guess is that Congress, one way or another, addresses this. But that could go either direction in how they address it."

IRS eases FATCA enforcement for 2014 and 2015

The Internal Revenue Service said it would regard 2014 and 2015 as a transition period for purposes of IRS enforcement and administration of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act for banks that have made a good-faith effort to comply. FATCA was included as part of the HIRE Act of 2010 and requires foreign financial institutions to report on the holdings of U.S. citizens or else face stiff penalties.

CNNMoney asked the Tax Institute of H&R Block to compare the combined federal, state and local income tax bill on a gross household income of $100,000 in each of the three cities.

Wealthy paid 13 percent more tax on same income

It's no secret that high-income households have historically paid more than their fair share of income tax relative to their numbers. For the 2013 filing season for 2012 individual income tax returns, as of July 25, 2013, the Internal Revenue Service processed 137 million returns with adjusted gross income totaling $7.6 trillion and income tax after credits totaling $894 billion.

IRS comissioner: US can't end companies' offshore tax deals

The U.S. government probably can't take regulatory action to stop companies from lowering tax bills through deals that put their legal addresses outside the country, John Koskinen, commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, said. Pfizer Inc. proposed the biggest such deal yet, a $98.7 billion takeover of AstraZeneca Plc, that would move the largest U.S. drugmaker to the U.K. for tax purposes and lower its tax rate.
