Native Americans: IRS may tax tribal members social, cultural benefits, per capita payments
The Associated Press via The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
John Yellowbird Steele, chief of the Ogalala Sioux Tribe, said the Internal Revenue Service is failing to recognize tribal sovereignty by trying to tax government-funded assistance such as housing, school clothes and burial aid that tribes give their members. Speaking to a Senate panel, Steele invoked the treaties between the U.S. and his South Dakota tribe as he criticized the IRS for what seems to be a stepped-up effort to tax tribal assistance. More

Congress members agree to fix tricky tax code
The Washington Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Amid all the unbridled partisanship and naysaying about Washington, D.C., gridlock, a glimmer of consensus has begun to develop in Congress around the herculean task of fixing the nation's tax code. House Speaker John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, has said rewriting the tax code is a top priority; both President Barack Obama and likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney say it needs to be done, and Sen. Max Baucus, the top Democratic tax-law writer in Congress, said that it's time to clear out some of the thousands of tax breaks that have infiltrated the code since it was last overhauled in 1986. Senate panel boosts spending on IRS, Pell Grants
The Associated Press via The Huffington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A Senate panel divided along party lines to approve legislation funding President Barack Obama's health care and financial services overhaul laws and boosting spending on the IRS and Pell Grants for low-income college students. The twin Appropriations Committee votes, 16-14, came on two spending bills for the budget year beginning Oct. 1, but there's virtually no chance the measures — or any of the 12 annual agency spending bills — become law by then. They now go to the full Senate for consideration. Republicans uniformly opposed the measures, chiefly over money for health care and new Wall Street rules. More

SEC quizzed Facebook on mobile trends before IPO
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Securities and Exchange Commission quizzed Facebook Inc. on the impact of growth in mobile users in the months leading up to the social network's initial public offering, letters released by the regulator show. "Assuming that the trend towards mobile continues and your mobile monetization efforts are unsuccessful, ensure that your disclosure fully addresses the potential consequences to your revenue and financial results rather than just stating that they 'may be negatively affected,'" the SEC wrote in a Feb. 28 letter to Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Ebersman. Widespread Amazon and Internet taxes coming soon
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Amazon taxes are not new taxes. They merely address who is responsible for collecting tax that's always been due on tangible personal property sales. Most states — 45 — have sales tax. If you buy online and have items shipped into one of those states, you are liable for use tax, the mirror image of sales tax. More
