Blocked treaties a concern ahead of tax evasion law

A lone Republican lawmaker in Kentucky is blocking Senate votes on several tax treaties is a concern, but won't stop a new antitax evasion law from taking effect in 2014, a Department of Treasury official said. Sen. Rand Paul's hold on the treaties "is a concern" isolated to "a few agreements" with foreign governments, said Jesse Eggert, associate international tax counsel at the Department of Treasury, at a conference.

Andrew Fieldhouse, a federal budget policy analyst at the Economic Policy Institute and the Century Foundation, has a new paper out of EPI that does a great job of illustrating the limits of tax policy in this area.

Study: Income inequality rising because of tax code
Moneynews
Changes to the tax code in recent decades has helped increase inequality, argues a study by the Economic Policy Institute. The top 1 percent of earners, it says, is pulling away from the rest of the population. Between 1979 and 2007, real income for the top 1 percent rose a cumulative 240.5 percent when including government transfers and employer-provided benefits.

Cisco CEO: US tax system is broken

VideoBriefNetwork giant Cisco holds nearly $50 billion in profits offshore, but CEO John Chambers said the company is unlikely to repatriate the money back to the U.S. "I cannot repatriate the $47 billion," Chambers told CNBC, speaking from the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Swiss scramble to get banks off US tax hook

The Swiss government is expected to make a last-ditch attempt to protect its banks from criminal charges in the United States by issuing an executive order allowing them to pass data to U.S. authorities. After parliament blocked a bill that would have allowed the banks to sidestep strict secrecy laws, the government's seven-strong Federal Council will on look for another way to facilitate the release of data.

ETAAC: IRS should work more closely with preparers

The Internal Revenue Service Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee's 2013 Annual Report to Congress recommends that the IRS work more closely with tax preparers, accountants and others to pursue its goal of improving compliance electronically. It also recommended that — with consent from the taxpayer — the service heighten access to information for taxpayers, preparers and other third parties through real-time Internet tools to mitigate fraud "and to achieve more accurate and timely returns."

Internet sales tax bill faces House showdown

In Washington, the drive to collect Internet sales taxes is heating up, as a bill that would raise the cost of shopping online nears a showdown in the House. The Marketplace Fairness Act, which passed the Senate last month with bipartisan support, would require online merchants to collect sales tax from customers. The bill would level the playing field for traditional retailers, whose products appear more expensive, supporters say.
