AAA-CPA Introduces New Law Student Member Division
AAA-CPA
The AAA-CPA is pleased to announce its newest Law Student Member Division at Florida State University. Professor Steve R. Johnson with the FSU College of Law and professor Robyn Jarnagin with the FSU College of Business will be assisting with this program along with the first elected student President Corey D. Luttrell. Luttrell received his bachelor's degree in economics and political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is currently attending both the FSU College of Law and FSU College of Business with an anticipated graduation date of May 2016. Joining Luttrell are Nicholas E. Serra, Christa L. Childers, Marcia E. Sampson, Nicole E. Senetcen and Abdool Khaleel. The AAA-CPA is sorry to have to inform you all of the passing of former President Alvin Kurtzman. His obituary is below. Please note the address on file with the AAA-CPA in case you'd like to send condolences. The address is as follows: 947 Tiverton Ave., #635, Los Angeles, CA 90024.

Alvin M. Kurtzman passed away peacefully at home Sept. 22 at 90 years of age. For over 50 years, Kurtzman was a practicing attorney-CPA in Los Angeles as a partner in the law firm of Kurtzman & Sarfaty. Kurtzman was a gentle, sweet and kind man who was a friend, teacher and inspiration to his children, and a loving husband. All who knew him enjoyed his clever sense of humor. Kurtzman is survived by his wife Jackie Kurtzman of 55 years; his children Lori Kurtzman, Clifford Kurtzman and Dru (John) Mueller; and grandchildren Kira Kurtzman, Kaspar Mueller, Bennett Mueller and Alena Mueller. He was preceded in death by his son Kenneth Kurtzman. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kenneth Kurtzman Memorial Scholarship Fund: 3294 University Relations — UC Berkeley, 2440 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, CA 94720-4200. Special thanks to Kurtzman's devoted caregivers Jorge Montinola and Alejo Esoy.

Crackdown Targets Inversions Designed to Limit US taxes

VideoBriefThe Department of the Treasury announced steps that will make it harder for U.S. companies to move their addresses outside the country to reduce taxes, clamping down on the practice known as inversions. The rules include a prohibition on "hopscotch" loans that let companies access foreign cash without paying U.S. taxes, and impose new curbs on actions that companies can use to make such transactions qualify for favorable tax treatment.

Move to Curb US Corporate Tax Dodges Could Delay Reform

The Obama administration's effort to curb corporate inversions — the strategy of moving company headquarters overseas to dodge U.S. taxes — drew boos from businesses and cheers from consumer and labor groups. No surprise there. But the Department of the Treasury's rule tweaks to discourage tax-avoidance deals also united everyone on one point: The country needs comprehensive tax-reform legislation.

New Scheme Targets FATCA Data

The Internal Revenue Service is warning international financial institutions complying with the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act of an ongoing fraud. Scammers posing as the IRS have solicited financial institutions seeking account holder identification and financial account information, the service said. The IRS has reports of incidents from multiple countries and continents.

Tax-evasion Crackdown Has 'Intense' Impact on Expatriates

The U.S crackdown on tax evasion is having an "intense impact" on Americans living abroad, according to a new report by Democrats Abroad, the official arm of the Democratic Party for Americans living outside the U.S. Nearly 6,600 expatriates responded to a survey conducted in June and July about the effects of the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act.
