Although the number of cosmetic procedures performed in the United States has declined over the past year, the United Kingdom has seen an increase, according to 24-7PressRelease.com. According to statistics released Jan. 31 by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, the U.K. experienced a 5 percent increase in demand for cosmetic procedures from 2007 to 2008, and a 9 percent increase from 2008 to 2009.

Millions of liters of "fat" - or adipose tissue - from weight-loss surgery are thrown away every year. But according to Prof Peter Rubin, who briefed local scientists in Melbourne, the discarded tissue could be transformed into anything from bones to heart muscle - and even slow the aging process. "This is the stuff that we throw away, but I call it
liquid gold," Prof Rubin said. "Adipose tissue is really a rich source of adult stem cells."
