Senate debates health reform bill with 1-year Medicare pay
patch American Medical News Share Senators opened debate on national health system reform legislation on Nov. 30 in partisan fashion. Also drawing opposition is a provision to impose a 5 percent tax on elective cosmetic surgeries and require physicians to collect it. The American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery is unified against the provision, said Steven Hopping, MD, immediate past president. "To ask us to be tax collectors is really unprecedented" and would pose an administrative burden, he said. Also, because 80 percent of the patients having cosmetic procedures are female, "this is a tax against women."More
Breast enlargement tax that failed taints U.S. plan (correct) Bloomberg Share A tax on breast enhancements and other cosmetic care, similar to one proposed in the U.S. Senate’s health-overhaul
legislation, doesn’t generate even a third of the $30 million a year originally projected for it in New Jersey, the only state with such a levy. The New Jersey tax hasn’t been worth the controversy that followed, said Joseph Cryan, the assemblyman who proposed it. It has spurred sometimes angry debate from doctors over the medical necessity of procedures, and chased customers out of state, he said. It also prompted charges of discrimination against middle-class women, who make up the
majority of patients, according to the Chicago-based American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. More
