106 ACOs launch in January

On the first day of 2013, 106 new accountable care organizations officially started participating in the Medicare shared savings program, as federal health officials try to show that new health reform programs powered in part by better IT are starting to pay off. "ACOs have helped to set Medicare on a more sustainable path today and into the future, as well as serve as a model for what improvements are possible for our nation's health care system," Jonathan Blum, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' acting principal deputy administrator, wrote in a recent blog post. A patient advocacy group is calling on the government to issue guidance to physicians on how cloud-based technology should be implemented and used so fewer patients are put at risk of data breaches. Deborah C. EHR incentives over $10 billion to date

Medicare and Medicaid electronic health record payments are estimated to have blasted through $10.3 billion to a total of 180,200 physicians and hospitals through December since the program's inception. December's payments of $1.25 billion were driven by the largest amount of hospital payments for an individual month, according to Robert Anthony, a specialist in CMS' Office of eHealth Standards and Services. Better nurse staffing levels tied to lower readmissions rates

A better work environment and improved staffing levels for nurses could mean lower rates of hospital readmissions, according to a study. Published the in the journal Medical Care, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded study used nurse survey data and patient discharge data from three states to determine the relationship between 30-day rehospitalizations and nursing factors such as education, environment and workload. More
