Preparing for the new PPACA electronic payments environment
Becker's Hospital Review
While healthcare has been transitioning from paper-based processes to electronic transactions for years, the pace has been far slower than expected. That's all about to change, however, with the landmark Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act serving as the catalyst moving the industry toward greater reliance on electronic payment processing. New operating rules governing healthcare transactions that took effect Jan.1, 2014, create unprecedented opportunities for healthcare providers to increase efficiency and streamline billing and insurance-related administration.

Resistance is futile: Why you should embrace ICD-10
By Charlotte Bohnett
The thought of transitioning to ICD-10 and its 68,000 diagnosis codes might have you shaking in your boots. You might also be doing anything in your power to deny the inevitable — possibly to the point of eschewing any of the noted benefits of ICD-10. Sure, it'll be quite the transition, but an important and necessary one. But before you pooh-pooh 10 and say ICD-9 is just fine, hear me — and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services — out.

New path to Medicare cost control
Modern Healthcare
Move over accountable care. A new contender for controlling Medicare costs has entered the arena. The Better Care, Lower Cost Act of 2014, introduced this month by Democratic and Republican sponsors in the House and Senate, offers an innovative path for the future of Medicare. Under the bill, Medicare would cap payments for the sickest beneficiaries who enter the program, but set the cap high enough to fund teams that can focus on strategies that reduce hospital admissions and keep overall costs under the cap. It is, in essence, a shared-savings program — even though that term does not appear in the bill.
