Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., have introduced and pledged to pass a bill to repeal the expanded 1099 reporting requirements in the health law. Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, businesses are required to file a 1099 report with the Internal Revenue Service listing vendors with whom they have paid $600 or more during the tax year. Businesses, however, have said the new reporting rules would be too time-consuming for them to meet. More

A recent Hay Group study found that newly formed clinical informatics positions can be difficult to fill, with 47 percent of healthcare organizations reporting challenges with recruitment, retention or both. In addition, 82 percent of respondents report that these positions are designed to be filled by full-time employees, rather than retaining specialists on a contractual or consulting basis. However, many say these positions originated with temporary agreements. More

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced a new funding opportunity for state grants to help states implement health insurance exchanges. The Health and Human Services Department (HHS) plans to broaden the categories of data that federal agencies will make available in order to help developers create innovative tools. It's asking for public comment about the non-federal data and health indicator data sets that it should promote. HHS anticipates that the available data will support development of applications, Web-based tools, dashboards and other methods for electronic data visualization that will improve decision making by individuals, groups and government through a deeper understanding of complex health issues.
