Specialty ACOs: The next step in accountable care
Becker's Spine Review
The concept of accountable care organizations — of payors and care providers working together to achieve the triple aim of lowering healthcare costs while improving the quality of care and patient outcomes — has mainly been focused on primary care since the idea was formalized by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in 2010. Lately, however, the focus of ACOs has shifted slightly from primary care to specific chronic diseases, such as cancer, chronic kidney disease and end stage renal disease.

Health law's rules help hospitals cut patient readmission rate
The Washington Post
Over the past several months, America’s hospitals have achieved a feat that long seemed beyond reach: substantially reducing the share of patients who must return for treatment almost as soon as they are discharged. According to statistics compiled by the Obama administration, the nationwide rate of hospital readmissions of Medicare patients within 30 days of discharge declined to about 17.8 percent by last November after remaining stuck near 19 percent over the five years that the data has been collected, and likely for decades prior to that.

CMS: No more delays with move to ICD-10
American Medical News
The mandated transition by billers throughout the health system to the more complex ICD-10 diagnosis codes will go forward without any further delays, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services stated in a Feb. 6 letter to the American Medical Association. Acting CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner made the case for moving forward with ICD-10 to modernize the health care system. Halting its implementation, which has been ongoing since 2009, would mean relying on outdated ICD-9 codes that soon will be incompatible with general health care needs and new technologies, she stated.

If practices don't change, EHRs lose money
MedPage Today
The average physician lost nearly $44,000 over five years implementing an electronic health record system, a large pilot study found, but the technology itself was just part of the reason. Just 27 percent of practices achieved a positive 5-year return on investment — a number that would rise to 41 percent with the addition of federal incentives to use EHRs, the study in the March issue of Health Affairs stated. But the vast majority of practices lost money because they failed to make operational changes to realize the benefits of EHRs such as ditching paper medical records after adoption, Julia Adler-Milstein, PhD, of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and colleagues wrote.

Looking ahead to computer-assisted physician documentation tools
Government Health IT
With ICD-10 on the horizon, does it make sense now to select a CAC tool, or would it be better to wait and do so post-compliance? That depends on how much data a particular healthcare organization has to run through the system during pre-ICD-10 compliance testing, a number of HIMSS13 participants agreed, recommending testing with your own data and archiving those ICD-9 test sets for future use with analytics.

Study shows price transparency an issue for hospitals
Healthcare Finance News
Despite the federal government's efforts to foster pricing transparency at hospitals, a new study finds that many hospitals can't provide a price for a common surgical procedure. "Hospital administrators, providers and leadership should be prepared for patients to inquire about prices," said Jaime Rosenthal, one of the authors of the report. "In many cases, none of these parties have pricing information readily available, so I suspect it will take major efforts to make these data available."

CMS, Emdeon begin mapping HIPAA 6020 and beyond
Government Health IT
Although new HIPAA electronic transaction standards have been put on the backburner, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has begun the process of mapping out how those new standards will function. Part of that process is to figure out what the impact of moving to new standards will be on the healthcare industry, and to do that it has awarded a contract to revenue and payment cycle management company Emdeon.
