CMS finalizes 2015 payment parameters, standards for PPACA plans
Becker's Hospital Review
CMS has released a final rule containing standards for health insurers selling coverage through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act exchanges in 2015. A fact sheet on the standards includes a bulletin on the second extension of health plans that don't comply with PPACA requirements. The White House announced last week that consumers will now be able to renew non-PPACA compliant plans through Oct. 1, 2016, which means some of the old policies will still be in effect in 2017.

Cost accounting on steroids for new era
Healthcare Finance News

To achieve this, hospitals need cost accounting on steroids. In the past, cost accounting was mainly used to tell hospitals if they were making money on a specific DRG, procedure, specialty, doctor or payer. This information was also useful when negotiating contracts.

CMS says no to additional meaningful use and ICD-10 delays
By Pamela Lewis Dolan
Despite pleas from organized medicine, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says there will be no delays to Stage 2 of the meaningful use incentive program. In addition, implementation of ICD-10 will also go on as scheduled. Marilyn Tavenner, administrator of CMS, made the announcement at the annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society trade show and convention. It came a week after a group of 48 medical associations and societies sent a letter requesting more time to implement the 2014 edition certified software needed for Stage 2.

ICD-9 and ICD-10 need to co-exist, at first
Government Health IT
As the Oct. 1 deadline nears for the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10, major hurdles for payers and providers loom large. An implementation of this magnitude brings real risk that something could go wrong, and business continuity could suffer if healthcare organizations aren't prepared for all possibilities. The best way to ensure an expected and desired level of business continuity is for ICD-9 and ICD-10 to co-exist. Expect to see the two coding systems function simultaneously – at least for a time – and to ensure healthcare businesses continue to operate properly.
