But smooth interactions between patients and the hospital business office should also be viewed as critical to an organization's quality, says one CFO. This year's event will be held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, Calif., from Oct. 15-17. Registration information will be available in July.

HOPD vs. physician office: A case study in the payment gap

This month, the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission released its annual report to Congress. One of the primary recommendations the group made to Congress was site-neutral Medicare payments. The proposal is not new, and hospitals have fought its implementation in the past. MedPAC said payments between hospital outpatient departments and other outpatient settings, such as physician offices and ambulatory surgery centers, need to be better aligned.

Survey: Major health payers say they are ready for ICD-10

With the Oct. 1 ICD-10 implementation deadline looming, most national commercial health insurers say are ready for the code change, according to a survey from the American Academy of Family Physicians. "It is important that the nation's largest private payers including UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield and Humana, are ready for the transition so payments to physicians are not delayed," according to AAFP survey results.

Progress made in patient privacy, but criminal attacks increasing

The number of data breaches has declined slightly over the past year. But the state of patient privacy and data protection is not good, according to the Fourth Annual Benchmark Study on Patient Privacy and Data Security. Data breaches cost healthcare organizations an average of $2 million over a two-year period, according to the survey. This is down from $2.4 million a year ago. While employee negligence is responsible for the largest number of breach incidents, the number of breaches caused by malicious attacks has increased 100 percent over the past four years.
