Survey: Majority of physician groups haven't started down 5010 path
Physician groups are even further behind the 5010 implementation curve than hospitals are. A majority of the respondents to a recent survey by the Medical Group Management Association said that they have not had critical software upgrades done nor scheduled testing of the new transaction set with health plans. Nearly 60 percent of respondents said they hadn't begun implementation of the 5010 set. By Jan. 1, 2012, all HIPAA-covered entities, including physicians and medical groups, will be required to use the 5010 set in all electronic transactions, including claims submission, eligibility checking, claims status inquiries and electronic remittance advice. At a February HIMSS11 session on accountable care organizations packed with provider IT execs, the speaker asked how many were planning to be part of an accountable care organization. Nearly all raised their hands. If the health reform law survives its legal challenges, they'll soon have the opportunity. That said, a scan of the existing healthcare information technology landscape suggests many providers remain years away from having the capabilities to operate as ACOs. More

Healthcare administration simplification
As you know, there is lots of dialogue on Capitol Hill right now about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), and efforts by House Republicans to repeal this law. Bill would post every physician's Medicare billing data on Internet
American Medical News Share
A Senate bill aimed at curtailing Medicare fraud would publish physician billing data online, letting viewers determine how much individual doctors earn annually from the program. Complex healthcare law turns into payday for consultants
The Washington Post Share
The year-old health law, with its layers of complexity, is setting off a gold rush for high-priced lawyers and consultants. But if they work, ACOs will likely spread to private patients as well. More
