HHS announces ICD-10 delay
MedPage Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Department of Health and Human Services has proposed a one-year delay in its deadline for implementing the new ICD-10 diagnosis coding system. In a fact sheet announcing a proposed rule that sets a deadline of Oct. 1, 2014 to comply with the ICD-10 system, HHS noted that "some provider groups have expressed serious concerns about their ability to meet the Oct. 1, 2013 compliance date." Their concerns were partly based on difficulties with implementing a new standardized health claims form, known as Version 5010, for electronic health transactions. Providers need to implement Version 5010 before they can start using ICD-10. More

American Medical Association    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Small organizations, including physician practices, represented the largest number of data breaches in 2011, according to Verizon's annual Data Breach Investigations Report. One of the reasons breaches at small healthcare organizations are on the rise is that automated attacks searching for remote Internet access services combined with weak passwords "were successful against smaller healthcare businesses, such as physicians' offices and clinics," said Marc Spitler, senior risk analyst of RISK Intelligence for Verizon. MedPage Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With the rise of high-deductible plans and growing out-of-pocket costs, more patients are doing comparison shopping with their healthcare, the way they do with electronics, cars, and other products and services. Just as patients have been comparing doctor ratings on HealthGrades.com and Vitals.com, now they can compare the costs associated with those providers and procedures as well. Sites like NewChoiceHealth.com, HealthcareBlueBook.com, and PriceDoc.com allow patients to see various medical procedure costs side-by-side. The recently launched MedicalBillExchange.com enables comparison-shopping, but also offers users a chance to earn money to pay those bills. More

MedPAC says fee-for-service model hinders care coordination
Government Health IT    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission has found through an analysis of pilot projects what is already widely known — that the current fee-for-service model does not promote the teamwork and flexibility needed to coordinate care to improve patient outcomes. The fragmented delivery of care and the number of providers involved in a patient's episode of care erects barriers to be able to effectively coordinate care. MedPAC wants to develop recommendations for payment incentives to encourage innovation to achieve better patient results. More
