    The Joint Commission, an independent, non-profit organization that accredits and certifies health care organizations, recently issued a Sentinel Event Alert to identify patient safety risks related to the use of health information technology and to recommend actions that hospitals and other accredited organizations should consider.

    Tablet app reduces CHF patient readmissions by 53 percent

    New York City-based Health Recovery Solutions announced that its tablet-based program reduced the 30-day readmission rate for 130 congestive heart failure patients at Penn Medicine's Penn Care at Home program by 53 percent. Health Recovery Solutions looked at Penn Care at Home's data between July 2014 and February 2015. During this time, the readmission rate fell from 8 percent to 3.8 percent.

    CMS starts review period for open payments system
    Government Health IT
    The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has set a 45-day review period for physicians and teaching hospitals to evaluate the accuracy of payments attributed to them as part of the Open Payments System. Launched last September, the program is mandated by the Affordable Care Act's Sunshine Act. The CMS published information about 4.45 million payments valued at $3.7 billion for the last five months of 2013.

    Nearly 90 percent of Americans have health coverage

    Nearly 9 out of 10 Americans now have health insurance, a sharp improvement from two years ago before Obamacare was put in place. A poll by Gallup found that the uninsured rate among U.S adults declined to 11.9 percent in the first quarter, down one percentage point from the end of last year and an improvement from the 18 percent without insurance in the fall of 2013, when the Americans were first were able to sign up for coverage at state and federal exchanges.

    ICD-10, collections top revenue cycle concerns

    Revenue cycle leaders have a lot to focus on, but expert panelists at the Revenue Cycle Solutions Summit said point-of-service collections and the looming ICD-10 switch rank among the top challenges facing those departments in 2015. "Improving processes on the front-end of the revenue cycle is essential," said Robert Wagner, senior director of revenue cycle at Nebraska Methodist Health System during a Revenue Cycle Roundtable held prior to HIMSS15.
