    Becker's Hospital Review
Reaction has been mixed to the new security recommendations CMS included in its proposed rule for meaningful use Stage 3. Healthcare crunch: Patient costs rise, ability to pay drops
    CNBC
If you've been feeling a bit more financially strapped when faced with medical bills, you're not alone — not by a long shot. Americans last year were hit both with "skyrocketing" costs for some popular medical procedures, and with health insurance deductibles that are rising at a rate well above inflation.

Should HHS delay ICD-10 penalty for 2 years?
    Healthcare IT News
Anyone hoping that the clock would keep ticking toward the Oct. 1 compliance deadline faster than Congress could say "ICD-10" might want to pay attention to the prodding some U.S. Senators gave Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell. "The reasonable thing would be to delay the penalty phase for two years as people transition," said Louisiana freshmen Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, MD, during a hearing about HHS' proposed 2016 budget.

5 billion people lack access to surgical care
    FierceHealthcare
Though "surgery is an integral, indivisible part of healthcare," 5 billion people worldwide lack access to safe and affordable surgical care, according to a new commission from The Lancet. Only 6 percent of the 313 million surgical procedures each year occur in the world's poorest countries, which are home to more than a third of the world's population, and in 2010, an estimated 32.9 percent of deaths worldwide were attributed to conditions needing surgical care. These numbers not only reflect wide disparities in healthcare access, but they have major financial costs as well.

How often are opioids for chronic pain truly misused?
    By Dorothy L. Tengler
More than 1.5 billion people worldwide suffer from chronic pain, and treating it can be challenging for physicians. Doctors often resort to the use of chronic opioid therapy, which has increased substantially in recent years. To examine just how pervasive this issue is, the American Pain Society and the American Academy of Pain Medicine commissioned a systematic review of the evidence on chronic opioid therapy for chronic noncancer pain and convened a multidisciplinary expert panel to review the evidence and formulate recommendations.

Hospitals increasingly turn to patients for advice
    Kaiser Health News
Jane Maier was one of a select group of patients invited in early 2012 to help Partners HealthCare, Massachusetts' largest health system, pick its new electronic health record system – a critical investment of close to $700 million. The system, which is now being phased in, will help coordinate services and reshape how patients and doctors find and read medical information. The fact that Partners sought the perspective of patients highlights how hospitals increasingly care about what their customers think.
