    While ICD-10 proponents are focused on ensuring there is no further delay to the ICD-10 implementation deadline, a new bill – called H.R. 2126 – introduced by Representative Ted Poe calls for completely prohibiting the Department of Health and Human Services from transitioning the healthcare system in the nation from the ICD-9 coding set to the new ICD-10 diagnostic codes.

    Even though the overall U.S. economy is improving, let's face it – the healthcare reimbursement system remains brutal. Many medical groups continue to struggle, looking for relief from the mounting pressures on their profitability. Declining reimbursements (60 percent); rising costs (50 percent); requirements from the Affordable Care Act (49 percent); and the transition to ICD-10 (43 percent) top the list of financial challenges that more than 5,000 physicians reported in the Practice Profitability Index. Providers are working hard to defend against reimbursement cuts and to lower their operating costs — all while still providing top-quality care to patients.

    Unprecedented number of telemedicine bills awaiting Congressional action

    With several proposed pieces of legislation introduced in both the House and Senate, momentum appears to be growing in Congress to expand federal support for telemedicine, according to the American Telemedicine Association. "Such action is unprecedented in the 22 years that ATA has been working with Congress," said Jonathan Linkous, CEO of ATA.

    Hospitals stagnate on patient safety outcomes

    The Leapfrog Group's latest hospital safety scores now allow users to see how facilities scored over time, and the data show that hospitals still have much room for improvement when it comes to keeping patients safe. Leapfrog gave 782 of the 2,523 hospitals an "A" for patient safety and 719 a "B". But 859 earned a "C," 143 received a "D" and 20 earned an "F".
