OIG: Physician payments must reflect fair market value
    FiercePracticeManagement
In its most recent in a series of warnings addressing physician issues, the Office of Inspector General released a new fraud alert this month regarding physician compensation arrangements that could violate anti-kickback regulations if payments do not reflect fair market value. In particular, the OIG cites issues tied to medical directorships that pay for services a physician did not actually provide. In addition to payments that go above fair market value, compensation arrangements that account for the volume or value of referrals could be considered anti-kickback violations.

How healthcare leaders can increase transparency, improve patient safety
    FierceHealthcare
Organizations must have transparency in order to create a true culture of patient safety. But it takes strong leadership to overcome the barriers to transparency ingrained in healthcare culture so that organizations can be open about errors and mistakes that harm patients and make changes in their systems to keep them from happening again, argue four members of the National Patient Safety Foundation's Lucian Leape Institute.

Medicare at 50: Is it working?
    Modern Medicine
"No longer will older Americans be denied the healing miracle of modern medicine. No longer will illness crush and destroy the savings that they have so carefully put away over a lifetime." With those words, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare legislation into law 50 years ago. It was the culmination of a decades-long effort to make healthcare affordable to the nation's elderly population, and represented the first large-scale government involvement in the nation’s healthcare system — a role that was highly controversial at the time and remains so today.

Patient engagement: First care. Then share.
    Healthcare IT News

To improve hospital-physician relationships, involve docs in decision-making
    FierceHealthcare
Healthcare leaders who want support from their physicians must step up efforts to involve them in key decisions, according to an opinion piece in Forbes. "No longer can administrators rely on support for decisions in which the physicians had no real input," wrote Josh Weisbrod and Tim van Biesen, New York-based partners in the business consulting firm Bain & Company's healthcare practice.
