Centralizing the revenue cycle protects the bottom line
    HealthLeaders Media
As margins tighten in the face of growing CMS payment penalties and shifting reimbursement models, hospitals and health systems are analyzing their internal financial processes and looking for new strategies to prevent revenue leakage. Advocate Health Care, a 12-hospital health system based in Downers Grove, Illinois, opened its shared revenue center in November 2013 with the goal of doing just that. The organization expects to protect its bottom line by centralizing and standardizing its system-wide revenue cycle. "In the past, the hospitals were independent in managing their revenue cycle, but the business has changed so our environment has to change with it," says Richard Lyman, Advocate's vice president, revenue cycle.

    Hospital pharmacies aid revenue cycle
    Healthcare Finance News
When it comes to speeding up the revenue cycle, the hospital pharmacy has its own part to play. "There are a lot of decisions taking place in the pharmacy that can have an impact on the financial health of the entire hospital," said Durwin Logan, manager of pharmacy operations at Effingham Hospital in Springfield, Georgia. When Effingham Hospital initially began to look at the pharmacy's contribution to the revenue cycle, the amount of money involved hit home rather quickly.

Is use of GEMs to prepare for ICD-10 wise?
    Health Data Management
In preparation for ICD-10, the federal government developed General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs), a translation tool to aid in converting data from ICD-9 to 10, and vice versa. For-profit hospital revenues, earnings soar
    FierceHealthFinance
As millions of Americans are added to the rolls of insured under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the for-profit, publicly-traded hospital chains that care for them have gone on a roll of their own. The ACA recently fattened the bottom lines of two big hospital chains: Universal Health Services, Inc. and LifePoint Hospitals Inc. Universal's revenue is up 10 percent in the second quarter of 2014 compared to the second quarter of 2014, while LifePoint's profit was up 44 percent compared to the year-ago quarter, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Revenue cycle, health IT tools are vital as patients pay more
    EHR Intelligence
As the Affordable Care Act takes hold in a big way and accountable care models ask patients to take more financial responsibility for their health and well-being, the adoption of revenue cycle management tools has become the next critical chapter of the health IT implementation saga. Providers who have finally settled into using their EHRs are finding that significant gaps in their business processes are allowing revenue to leak away, and are starting to take action to plug the holes.

    Readmissions equation is changing
    Healthcare Payer News
With new incentives, hospitals are increasingly making the reduction of complications, infections and readmissions a priority, but there are still infrastructure gaps that can tangle payer-provider collaboration. For example, Dignity Health, one of the five largest hospital systems in the nation, saved an estimated $30 million in two years through evidence-based practices and a training regimen for nurses, called MeasureVentionists, which focused on preventing hospital-acquired infections and readmissions.

    Study: ACOs Flourishing in 2014
    American Academy of Family Physicians
Just as newly insured patients were entering the U.S. healthcare system at the start of 2014, physician practices were moving at an accelerated pace to join accountable care organizations (ACOs). Family medicine and other primary care practices, in particular, appear to be one of several factors behind the rapid growth of ACOs in the past six months, says a recent report from the healthcare intelligence company Leavitt Partners. An estimated 20.5 million people are now covered by ACOs. That's a dramatic increase from the beginning of the year, when the figure was an estimated 15 million.

    Q&A: On ICD-10 prep for non-covered entities
    Government Health IT
Not every healthcare organization is required to comply with the federal mandate for ICD-10 implementation. Insurers such as workers' compensation and auto insurers are not covered. But it looks like they're going to adopt ICD-10 coding anyway, at least according to Michele Hibbert, vice president of information management support at Mitchell International. Here Hibbert explains the status of ICD-10 preparation for non-HIPAA covered entities.
