How IPPS final rule affects medical coding

The final Inpatient Prospective Payment System rule specifies how hospitals are to be paid for Medicare beneficiaries' inpatient care starting Oct. 1 and clarifies penalties to hospitals. CMS offered hospitals some additional guidelines for inpatient admissions and finalized requirements for the Part A to Part B rebilling in the 2014 IPPS Final Rule, released Aug. 2. CMS also finalized a negative 0.8 percent recoupment adjustment as part of the documentation and coding adjustment mandated by the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012.

Study: Critical access, small hospitals falling behind in meaningful use

A study from Mathematica Policy Research and the American Hospital Association, published in Health Affairs, finds many critical access hospitals and other smaller hospitals are at risk to fail achieving meaningful use and face Medicare payment penalties in 2015.

Health, fitness apps pose HIPAA risks for doctors

Physicians might think twice about advising patients to use some mobile health and fitness apps. A July report indicates that many of those apps compromise patients' privacy. Just recommending apps may put doctors at risk for violations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

Armed with bigger fines, Medicare to punish 2,225 hospitals for excess readmissions

Medicare will levy $227 million in fines against hospitals in every state but one for the second round of the government's campaign to reduce the number of patients readmitted within a month, according to federal records released recently.
