According to a recent TransUnion Healthcare "pulse poll" distributed to more than 300 attendees of the Healthcare Financial Management Association's Annual National Institute conference, lack of preparedness and awareness on both sides of the payment equation are causing major challenges for point-of-service collections efforts. Seven out of 10 respondents said their hospital or health system collected less than 30 percent of their payments at the point of service. Nearly half (44 percent) of respondents said less than 15 percent of payments were collected prior to service. More

Management consulting firm Accenture published a report that found expectations of good customer service have risen sharply in the past five years, but insurers are failing to meet those expectations. Medicare says competitive pricing will save $28 billion

Medicare is dramatically expanding a program that it says will save billions of dollars and serve as a model for other cost-cutting efforts. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has announced the second round of a program that uses competitive bidding to set prices for certain medical products. Medicare now uses competitive bidding in nine cities and will expand to 91 areas, according to the announcement. In its first six months, the nine-city competitive bidding program has saved roughly $130 million, CMS officials said. More
