  • Joint Commission issues Sentinel Event Alert on patient falls

    Despite widespread prevention efforts, patient falls remain a dogged and dangerous problem in healthcare settings, The Joint Commission says. In a Sentinel Event Alert issued recently, The Joint Commission noted that patient falls with serious injury are among the top 10 sentinel events reported to its database, which has received 465 reports of patient falls with injuries since 2009. Of those falls, 63 percent resulted in death.

    The most expensive US cities for 7 common medical procedures

    The prices of standard medical services continue to vary wildly across the U.S., even within the same cities, according to the 2015 U.S. Costliest Cities Analysis by Castlight Health. In fact, in New York City, patients pay anywhere from $14 to $1,070 for the same cholesterol test. This is a 76x difference — the largest found in the study.

    Medicare primary-care initiative yields mixed results

    The CMS Innovation Center says the 483 medical practices participating in its Comprehensive Primary Care initiative achieved $24 million in gross Medicare savings, but few saved more than what the government paid them to coordinate patients' care. The initiative was authorized by the Affordable Care Act and launched in October 2012 to improve primary care by paying clinicians bonuses of about $20 a month per patient for providing care management.
