Healthcare providers' push to consolidate roils payers
    HealthLeaders Media
Healthcare provider claims that mergers boost efficiencies are drawing intense scrutiny from regulators and provoking a market challenge from payers. Old habits are hard to break. One of the goals of the federally led drive to create a value-based healthcare industry is to increase cooperation between major stakeholders. As a wave of healthcare provider consolidation sweeps across the country, the new age of cooperation between providers and payers is starting to look a lot like the old age of adversarial relationships.

The battle over EHR patient data
    Medical Economics
Who owns patient data in an electronic health record? It's a simple question with a complex answer. No longer confined to the shelves of a physician’s office, patient data is now shared and used by a myriad of organizations across healthcare: Other physicians and health systems, the EHR vendor, payers, and researchers, not to mention patients themselves. While primary care physicians often originate the medical record, the resulting data are not theirs alone.

HHS formally moves to close loophole allowing plans without hospital benefits
    Kaiser Health News
The Obama administration took another step to close what many see as a health-law loophole that allows large employers to offer medical plans without hospital coverage and bars their workers from subsidies to buy their own insurance. "It has come to our attention that certain group health plan designs that provide no coverage of inpatient hospital services are being promoted," the Department of Health and Human Services said in proposed rules issued recently.

Why this is the last time we should reset the ICD-10 countdown clock
    ICD10monitor
As promoters of patient safety and guardians of data integrity, health information management professionals have dedicated their careers to ensuring the high quality of information in all medical records, paper or electronic. Virtual care: A real-world strategic asset
    HIMSS wire
In the face of such hassles, consumers are embracing emerging virtual care models, which empower patients to take control of their health by having the majority of care taking place "virtually" through online resources and access to clinicians via phone, email or video technologies. The fact that payment models are now supporting virtual care, however, is probably what's pushing healthcare organizations to actually make the move to this alternative delivery model.
