The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranked the state 47th in terms of the percentage of the population that visited a dentist last year, and according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, 50 of Missouri's 114 counties have a shortage of dental professionals. In response to this public health crisis, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services released its 2009 statewide oral health plan, which addressed the difficulty of recruiting dentists to rural areas. Hancock deftly arranges rows of false teeth, pressing them into a wax model of woman's gumline. A Bunsen burner at his workbench keeps the wax warm and pliable. He peers at the mouth model through his glasses. Hancock is one of three dozen inmates who landed jobs in the Ohio Penal Industries’ dental lab where they made 2,932 sets of dentures for fellow prisoners last year. The 1,600-square-foot lab is on the second floor of a 1920s-era red-brick building, just above a shop that makes brooms and brushes. More |
