Placement of Dental Implants Results in Minimal Bone Loss
from American Academy of Periodontology via PhysOrg
Dental implants are frequently used as a replacement for missing teeth in order to restore the patient's tooth function and appearance. Previous research demonstrates that the placement of a dental implant disrupts the host tissue in the area of the implant, so practitioners often focus their treatment planning to carefully maintain the patient's bone and gum tissue surrounding the implant. X-rays Help Predict Permanent Bone Damage from Bisphosphonates
from Science Daily
Breast cancer patients, individuals at risk for osteoporosis and those undergoing certain types of bone cancer therapies often take drugs containing bisphosphonates. These drugs have been found to place people at risk for developing osteonecrosis of the jaws (a rotting of the jaw bones). Dentists, as well as oncologists, are now using X-rays to detect "ghost sockets" in patients that take these drugs and when these sockets are found, it signals that the jawbone is not healing the right way. Breaking Through the Barriers
from RDH Magazine
For whatever reasons, certain patients put up a wall or a barrier. We know that in our jobs, conversation is a very important factor. For me, it is probably one of the most appealing parts of the job, says Suzanne Hubbard, a RDH writer. Not only do I get to know patients, but I can help them toward better health. It allows us as clinicians to break down the barriers of fear, and replace those fears with trust and honesty. Open conversation helps us communicate effectively. When patients are open and receptive, we find that their oral health is better because they have heard, processed, and acted upon our information. More    E-mail article

Suturing for Optimal Soft-Tissue Management
from Journal of Oral Implantology
Establishing nontension primary wound closure of various soft tissue flaps is paramount for optimal postsurgical wound healing. Surgical procedures that require clinical flap manipulation, such as those used with traditional periodontal therapy, periodontal plastic cosmetic surgery, hard and soft tissue regeneration, and the excision of pathologic tissue, also require excellence in execution. Also paramount to clinical success is a thorough understanding of the various techniques of surgery, suturing, and the materials currently available to ensure the desired clinical results. Advanced Periodontal Therapy—To Save or Replace the Questionable Tooth
from Inside Dentistry
When the appropriate number and type(s) of bacteria colonize the subgingival pocket, root, and gingival surfaces, their waste products can cause two phenomena to occur. One of these is that the acids released cause destruction of the osseous and soft tissues in the region. Additionally, the lipopolysaccharides on the cell walls of bacteria and other released products from the cells lead to an inflammatory cascade that also has destructive effects on the periodontal attachment apparatus. The combination of these effects brings about periodontal disease and the loss of bone and soft tissue attachment to the surface of the tooth. More    E-mail article

New Practice for the New Economy
from Dental Economics
There's no question that with the current economic state of the world, most dental offices have made changes in their procedural mix. Most general dentists offer a number of different procedures in their offices, with an emphasis on cosmetic, implant, and reconstructive dentistry in recent years. Typical plain restorative dentistry has never seemed exciting to most general dentists because it is so bread and butter, and has modest fees attached to the procedures. More    E-mail article

Women Have More Powerful Immune Systems than Men
from Infection Control Today
When it comes to immunity, men may not have been dealt an equal hand. The latest study by Dr. Maya Saleh, of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre and McGillUniversity, shows that women have a more powerful immune system than men. In fact, the production of estrogen by females could have a beneficial effect on the innate inflammatory response against bacterial pathogens. These surprising results were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. More    E-mail article

Bill to Ban Mobile Dentistry Clinics Approved by Committee
from DentalPlans.com
A controversial bill to ban school-based mobile dental clinics has been approved by the Louisiana State House Health and Welfare Committee, according to a report from the Associated Press. The supporters of the ban, led by the Louisiana Dental Association, say the mobile units are unsanitary and unsafe, and children should be treated in a fully-equipped office regardless of whether or not they have dental insurance.
