Bone Fractures Researchers say fractures are a leading cause of injury-related hospital admissions in the U.S. When a bone breaks, the body must close the gap and bring the ends together to form a solid unit. First, a blood clot forms around the break to seal off the area and form a callous, or fibrous tissue. Slowly, bone cells form tiny threads that grow toward the other side, meeting in the middle to bridge the break. As more and more bone cells fill in the space, the break becomes more solid.
