$19,000 bill for patient's ride in medical chopper
KMOV-TV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBriefSteve Groom was in a car crash. It happened close to a hospital in the Litchfield, Ill., area. Instead of taking Groom to nearby St. Francis Hospital, the first responders decided he should be flown 50 miles away to a trauma center in Springfield. Six hours after he got there, Groom walked out with a slight concussion. In hindsight, it's hardly the type of injury that would require such a remarkable medical effort. More

EMS provider questions 3-dose nitro rule
JEMS    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Chris Kaiser writes, "How do you give nitroglycerine? If you're like the vast majority of EMS providers, you give it sublingually in either tablet or spray form, one 0.4 mg dose every five minutes until hypotension develops, symptoms resolve or a maximum of three doses are given. This has been a staple of the EMS protocols for every system I've worked for since I was an EMT-B volunteering for a rural ambulance service." More

Medevac choppers should be armed
EMS Flight Crew    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Army Dustoff Medevac helicopter crews have been performing stellar work in Afghanistan. When troops are wounded, the Dustoffs go into hostile territory often while taking ground fire. Most interesting: they go in unarmed. The helicopters are emblazoned with the Red Cross, and so according to the Geneva Conventions they are not allowed to carry offensive weapons. Just what constitutes an offensive weapon is another line of discussion, but the bottom line is that Dustoffs do not carry machine guns. More

When the agencies do not have contracts with insurers, the companies send reimbursement checks to patients, who are supposed to forward the money to the EMS agencies but often pocket them, officials say. Impact of timing on carotid artery stenting in patients after stroke or transient ischemic attack evaluated
Newswise    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A recent study found no significant difference in the outcome for patients who received carotid artery stenting at more than 30 days post-transient ischemic attack or stroke versus those who received CAS at 30 days or less post-event. Surgical literature recommends that the removal of plaque from the carotid artery take place within 14 days of a TIA or stroke for the best outcomes. However, little is known about the optimal timing of carotid artery stenting for these patients. More
