Brain cancer vaccine might turn fatal disease into a chronic condition
The Sacramento Bee    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy was diagnosed with a glioblastoma of the brain in May 2009, doctors understood there was little chance he could survive it. He died that August. "That's a malignant tumor. The current 5-year survival rate is 1 percent," says Ricardo Komotar, a neurooncologist at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. But cancer specialists from the University of Miami Medical School and nine other U.S. institutions are well into clinical experiments aimed at ending the tumor's fatal reputation. More

In another victory for an anticlotting drug co-developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. and Pfizer Inc., U.S. regulators agreed to a speedy review of the companies' application to market it. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration assigned "priority review" status to Eliquis, which Bristol and Pfizer propose to market for the prevention of strokes in people with a heart-rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation. The targeted date for an FDA decision is March 28, 2012, sooner than some analysts had expected. More

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment improves TBI and PTSD in veterans
MedIndia    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Treatment with hyperbaric oxygen benefits veterans with traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder, say researchers. Sixteen U.S. veterans injured in Iraq who had been diagnosed with mild-moderate traumatic brain injury/post-concussion syndrome or traumatic brain injury/post-concussion syndrome/post-traumatic distress disorder were enrolled in the pilot study. They completed a history and physical exam as well as a clinical interview by a neuropsychologist, psychometric testing, symptom and quality of life questionnaires, and baseline SPECT brain blood flow imaging prior to treatment. The veterans then underwent 40 treatments of low-dose hyperbaric oxygen therapy during 60-minute sessions over a 30-day period. More

Early behavior after head trauma predicts postconcussional syndrome
Clinical Psychiatry News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Patients with mild traumatic brain injury who reported all or nothing behavior were significantly more likely to have postconcussional syndrome three months later, data from a prospective study of 107 adults have shown. Approximately 15-30 percent of mild traumatic brain injury patients are at risk of developing postconcussional syndrome. PCS is a symptom cluster that includes physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral symptoms. To investigate the etiology of PCS, the researchers developed a cognitive-behavioral model that compared MTBI patients who did and did not develop the syndrome. More

Today's THV    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
VideoBrief An aneurysm is a weak spot on an artery wall that balloons into a bubble. If that bubble bursts, it may lead to serious brain damage or death. The design of a new stent makes it unique and it's giving patients, who otherwise aren't traditional candidates for surgery, another life saving option. More

Researchers identify proteins that ramp up ALS
Postmedia News via Montreal Gazette    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Despite decades of research, scientists have yet to identify the "silver bullet" to cure, or even slow, a lethal neurological disorder commonly called Lou Gherig's disease. But breakthrough research from Laval University in Quebec City has identified two proteins that conspire to promote amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The finding brings new understanding — and hope for a therapeutic target — in a disease that appears without clearly associated risk factors in up to 95 percent of cases. More
