The NIH-NCCAM recommends that research should stand and be considered solely on the merit of the scientific findings rather than be judged on the basis of professional degree held by the individual investigator.

In this spirit, the AAO provides Osteoblast citations originating from peer reviewed journals and are presented as items of interest to the AAO membership, without endorsement of specific content.

Subcutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation with inter-lead stimulation for axial neck, low back pain
Neuromodulation via Wiley Online Library    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While pain in the extremities often responds to treatment using spinal cord stimulation, axial pain is notoriously refractory to SCS. Interest in subcutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation as an alternative to SCS has emerged, but the most appropriate electrode locations and neurostimulator programming techniques are not yet clear. Advancing evidence based musculoskeletal physical therapy
Manual Therapy Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Evidence-based practice is defined as the "integration of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values." Central to this definition are both the development of an evidence base and the use of that evidence in practice to inform decision making. More

Complementary, alternative medicine in the treatment of pain in fibromyalgia
Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature for randomized trials of complementary and alternative medicine interventions for fibromyalgia. (This is an abstract. To view full article, you will need to log in.) More

Health related Internet use among patients of osteopathic physicians
The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Using the Internet has transformed communication and improved access to health related information for patients and physicians. The objective of this study was to determine why patients use the Internet for health related information, where patients find answers to their questions and whether patient use of the Internet impacts the patient-physician relationship. This study focused on patients of osteopathic physicians to confirm previously published data in a more specific population. (This is an abstract. To view full article, you will need to log in.) Supervised exercise, spinal manipulation, home exercise for chronic low back pain
The Spine Journal via ScienceDirect    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Several conservative therapies have been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of chronic low back pain, including different forms of exercise and spinal manipulative therapy. The efficacy of less time-consuming and less costly self-care interventions, for example, home exercise, remains inconclusive in CLBP populations. (This is an abstract. Can we identify how programs aimed at promoting self-management in musculoskeletal pain work and who benefits?
European Journal of Pain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There are now several systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials testing self-management for those with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Evidence for the effectiveness of self-management interventions in chronic musculoskeletal pain is equivocal and it is not clear for which sub-groups of patients SM is optimally effective. Relationships between joint motion, facet joint capsule strain during cat, human lumbar spinal motions
Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The lumbar facet joint capsule is innervated with mechanically sensitive neurons and is thought to contribute to proprioception and pain. Biomechanical investigations of the FJC have commonly used human cadaveric spines, whereas combined biomechanical and neurophysiological studies have typically used nonhuman animal models. The purpose of this study was to develop mathematical relationships describing vertebral kinematics and FJC strain in cat and human lumbar spine specimens during physiological spinal motions to facilitate future efforts at understanding the mechanosensory role of the FJC. Practice guidelines: How to explain central sensitization to patients with 'unexplained' chronic musculoskeletal pain
Manual Therapy Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Central sensitization provides an evidence-based explanation for many cases of "unexplained" chronic musculoskeletal pain. Prior to commencing rehabilitation in such cases, it is crucial to change maladaptive illness perceptions, to alter maladaptive pain cognitions and to reconceptualize pain. (This is an abstract.
