Periodontal regeneration: A look at the current and future landscape
DentistryIQ
A study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has shown that approximately half of American adults over age 30 have some form of periodontal disease, and it's even more prevalent in those age 65 and older. The ultimate goal of periodontal therapy is to give the patient healthy, functional teeth while maintaining as much of their natural dental structures as possible. Beyond its implications for oral health, it has become more apparent in the last decade that periodontal disease may also have an affect on the rest of the body.

Medical News Today
By means of so-called health coaching, researchers at the University of Copenhagen have helped a large group of diabetics to markedly improve their oral health. The patients assume responsibility for their own bodies and boost their self-efficacy through motivational health coaching, taking a different approach to conventional health campaigns and one-way communication. The research findings have just been published in Clinical Oral Investigations.

Dental scientists patent new agent to fight oral bacteria
Dental Tribune
Researchers at the University of Washington's School of Dentistry have received a patent for a new way of using titanium-based materials to control bacterial infections. They believe that the substances could be used in a patient's mouth after dental procedures to reduce the risk of infection or in mouthwashes and toothpastes to limit bacterial growth prophylactically.

Key role for Fusobacterium adhesin in non-orthodontic periodontal inflammation
medwireNews via The Medical News
Researchers from China have found that patients with gingivitis and periodontitis are more likely to have Fusobacterium nucleatum carrying the novel Fusobacterium adhesin A than periodontally healthy people. The results suggest that fadA, which is required for entry of the bacterium into endothelial cells, plays an important role in the development of gingivitis in patients without orthodontic devices.

The effectiveness of interdental brushes
RDH
The importance of plaque removal for the prevention of dental and systemic disease is becoming better understood by the general community. However, daily habits such as interproximal plaque removal have yet to be established by many people. Effective removal and disruption of plaque within the oral cavity is not achieved by simply brushing. Floss, which would be preferable to using only a toothbrush, is not used by the majority of the population on a regular basis.

Periocclusion
Surgical Restorative
Periodontal treatments are now well documented and codified. It is now undisputed that nonsurgical treatment needs to remove the largest amount of periodontal pathogens as possible in order to limit the individual inflammatory response and prevent future bone loss. Supragingival decontamination is ensured by the patient's daily oral hygiene habits, and the dental team performs the infragingival decontamination by scaling and root planing.

The necessity of subgingival air polishers
DentistryIQ
Air polishing is not a new technology. It's been used for almost 50 years, tracing its roots back to Dr. Robert Black and his invention, the Air Dent. Air polishers employ a mixture of powder and water delivered through a device via compressed air. This fine jet is directed toward the tooth surface leading to the removal of deposit (plaque and stain, mostly).
