American Academy of Periodontology publishes proceedings from its workshop on regeneration
AAP
The American Academy of Periodontology has released the official proceedings from its June 2014 workshop on regenerative therapies for periodontal disease. Systematic reviews and consensus reports from the "Enhancing Periodontal Health Through Regenerative Approaches" workshop are published in a supplement to the February 2015 print and online editions of the Journal of Periodontology.

Link may exist between oral health and rheumatoid arthritis

Poor oral health may cause rheumatoid arthritis, based on a new study. Researchers from the University of Louisville determined that poor oral health can raise the risk of rheumatoid arthritis based on the presence of an enzyme that is around when a person has gum disease. This enzyme, called peptidylarginine deiminanse, has also been associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

NYU study successfully screens for diabetes at dental visits using oral blood

It is estimated that 8.1 million of the 29.1 million Americans living with diabetes are undiagnosed, and many who have diabetes have poor glycemic control. Given that each year many Americans visit a dental provider but not a primary care provider, dental visits may be an opportune site for diabetes screening and monitoring glucose control for many at-risk patients.

Supreme Court drills dentists in teeth-bleaching dispute

The Supreme Court ruled Feb. 25 that a state regulatory board made up mostly of dentists violated federal law against unfair competition when it tried to prevent lower-cost competitors in other fields from offering teeth-whitening services. By a 6-3 vote, the justices rejected arguments from the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners that it was acting in the best interests of consumers when it pressured nondentists to get out of the lucrative trade in teeth-whitening services.
