While tooth decay can cause further dental complications, a new study has found that the problem also could increase the risk of obesity in children, according
to findings presented at The Endocrine Society's annual meeting. In an effort to discover the link between poor oral hygiene and excess weight gain, researchers enrolled a total of 65 children between the ages of 2 and 5 into a study. All the participants were given a dental exam and had blood taken.

A University of California-San Francisco study has found one more thing you can blame your mother for: your Jack O'Lantern smile. In a paper appearing in the current issue of the Journal of Dental Research, UCSF professor Jane Weintraub notes that the rural Hispanic subjects in her study had nearly double the odds of developing tooth decay if their mothers had untreated tooth decay as well.
