A recently survey has revealed that 98 percent of dentists oppose dental insurance companies setting fees for services they do not offer. Known as fee capping, this practice has upset dentists
nationwide — and legislators have taken notice. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, this year, "a total of 28 states introduced 46 pieces of legislation to stop insurance carriers from requiring dentists to accept caps on fees for services the carrier does not cover." More

For his research, Brunette draws upon sophisticated methods of
microfabrication and nanofabrication that can produce precisely characterized surfaces. He can then examine how cells respond to specific features and shapes of the implant's surface.

An Ohio law allowing hygienists to practice without a dentist's physical supervision will take effect Aug. 31. Signed into law May 27, the law creates the Oral Health Access Supervision Program, allowing dentists to send hygienists into settings outside the dental office to provide cleanings and other hygiene services. A tooth-bleaching agent may improve the oral health of elderly and special needs patients. That's according to U.S. dentists who have discovered that applying
the tooth whitener carbamide peroxide through a custom-fit mouth tray might combat problems associated with dexterity needed for flossing and brushing, as well as and dry mouth caused by certain medication. Dental experts at the Medical College of Georgia and Western University of Health Sciences suggest that standard oral hygiene can be difficult or impossible for patients with mental challenges or impaired manual dexterity.

A study published in the July issue of Health Affairs reveals that nearly 25 percent of children in California never have been to the dentist and that disparities exist across race, ethnicity and type of insurance when it comes to the length of time between dental care visits. The study, "Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Dental Care for Publicly Insured Children," supported by the California HealthCare Foundation, examined barriers
to dental care in California children ages 11 years and younger using data from the 2005 California Health Interview Survey.
