Vibrating injections don't hurt permanent tooth buds

Does using computer-controlled local anesthetic delivery technology for an intraligamentary injection on primary teeth in pediatric patients cause damage to
the underlying, developing adult permanent tooth? Not according to a new study in the International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry. Intraligamental anesthesia delivered by a high-pressure syringe often is associated with damage to the periodontal tissue. Developmental disturbances to the underlying permanent tooth buds are another potential complication. (May require free registration to view article.)

Survey finds poor oral care in Beijing
China Daily
Share

Since we were in kindergarten, doctors, teachers and our parents have reminded us of the importance of brushing our teeth. Those who have kept up with this good habit will have brushed more than 40,000
times by the time they turn 60. But the message hasn't taken hold in China's capital. A survey by the Beijing Stomatological Hospital shows that fewer than half of middle-age residents in Beijing clean their teeth even twice a week. And no more than 1 percent of people use dental floss.

Overcoming fear of the fee
Dental Economics
Share

Whether the economy is playing a frightful card in your community, patients of all demographics balk at dental fees. Overcoming this objection in a careful, conscientious way that is also good for your
practice is a major part of building the practice of your dreams. Introducing the concept of a health care financing program in your case presentation sequence and communicating it well will make all the difference. The fulcrum of your practice — the "tipping point" — is comprehensive diagnosis, complete treatment planning and excellent case presentation.

What's happening to your hands?

Has it ever occurred to you that your procedural gloves may be creating unnecessary hand fatigue? Many people don't give much thought to gloves and just wear whatever the office provides. Other clinicians keep ordering the same type again and again without considering there may be a brand, fabric or style that provides more comfort or improved tactile sensitivity.

Uninsured Virginians may lose free dental care
The Washington Post
Share

Advocates for uninsured Virginians say slow action from state and federal officials means that thousands of residents who could have received free dental care this summer will go unserved unless Congress intervenes. Virginia received authorization from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to use money from the state's Temporary Assistance for Needy Families fund to provide dental care to uninsured residents.

Time-resolved fluorescence offers new way to 'see' oral cancer
DrBicuspid.com

Researchers from the University of California-Davis are conducting in vivo experiments of a noninvasive, laser-based device that could aid in the early detection of oral and head and neck cancers. Laura Marcu, Ph.D., a professor of biomedical engineering at UC Davis, collaborated with Dr. D. Gregory Farwell and others in the Department of Otolaryngology at the UC Davis Cancer Center to develop the fiber-optic probe, which uses
time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy to provide molecular information of the tissue being imaged. (May require free registration to view article.)

Changes, opportunities for health care practitioners' finances
Dental Tribune International

Many areas can bring small and large changes to a practice's income as well as the individual health care practitioner. An area to take advantage of is the 2010 IRS Section 179 Tax Code, which allows business owners to lower their taxable income by acquiring eligible property (such as dental equipment, technology and off-the-shelf software). What makes the 2010 Section
179 benefit important is that in the year 2011, this generous allowance will come down to $25,000. As more and more dentists embrace equipment and technology, this benefit can be applied to lower the buyer's taxable income.

Fred Joyal: How to handle price shoppers
DentistryIQ
Share

I'm sure you know the drill. A patient calls your practice and asks how much it would cost for an examination. Knowing that this patient probably needs some
restorative care if he or she hasn't seen a dentist in awhile, you're faced with a choice: You can quote the patient the price for an exam, fully aware that the cost for treatment likely will be much more than that, or you can refuse to quote a price and risk upsetting the patient.

Survey: Many doctors don't report incompetent colleagues
WebMD

One-third of doctors who knew of peers who were incompetent or impaired, such as from alcohol or drug use, said they did not turn them in, according to a new survey. "I was expecting the number who
said they reported to be higher," says researcher Catherine M. DesRoches, DrPH, assistant professor of medicine at the Mongan Institute for Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. She and her colleagues evaluated responses from 1,891 doctors in a variety of specialties.
