A lifetime of service is what comes to mind when I think about Joan Phillips. It seems as if she had been working to promote art therapy for decades. My first encounter with Joan was when I was invited to speak at the workshop she organized annually at the University of Oklahoma (OU) in the late 80s. I have worked with her many times since then, and it is with sadness and admiration that I write this tribute to Joan.
Joan’s carefree and warm nature belied her ability to dig in and continue to contribute even in the face of adversity. For example, her enthusiasm for OU never waned even when, after years of teaching there, a graduate art therapy program still had not materialized. This did not stop her from advocating for the field in Oklahoma and nationally with her boundless energy and wit.

On Monday, April 3rd, a letter was sent to Chairman Tom Cole and Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro of the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies requesting the allocation of $5 million for Screening and Treatment for Maternal Mental Depression, as authorized by Section 10005 of the 21st Century Cures Act. The AATA joined 36 partner organizations, coordinated by the National Coalition for Maternal Mental Health, to urge the Subcommittee, as it develops appropriations legislation for FY 2018, to consider the “significant cost savings” that better screening and treatment of maternal depression will create in addition to preventing adverse outcomes for women, children and their families.

Susan Harder, MS, works both as a freelance artist and as an art therapist. She practices in a short-term inpatient facility for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors at Avera Behavioral Health, Sioux Falls, SD. After graduating with a BA in Art and Spanish from Bethel College, Susan continued to earn her MS in Art Therapy from Mount Mary University, Milwaukee, WI in 2015. Susan describes the AATA as “my main source for current art therapy information and education.” She especially values access to the Journal and to the annual conference as components of her AATA membership. She explains, “I had never felt more connected to the AATA community than when I attended my first conference in Minneapolis in 2015. It was inspiring to be surrounded by so many art therapists and hear presentations by leaders in the field who authored so many of the texts that I had read in graduate school.”

What do you think of when you hear the words “art therapy”? Do you think of a therapist for artists? A psychologist who holds up inkblot images to analyze patients’ personalities or disorders based off of what they see (better known as ‘The Rorschach Test’)? Or perhaps you think of a person who teaches art to children? The above are common fallacies that I have heard firsthand after telling people, "I’m an Art Psychotherapist."

Elder Care Alliance
Elder Care Alliance and the Northern California Chapter of the American Art Therapy Association co-hosted an open studio this past weekend. It was wonderful to share an art space with those working in and around the creative art therapy field. Among our participants were several art therapists, an art student from California College of the Arts, and several people interested in the field.
Prior to the art-making, art therapists were invited to share a meal with the elders at Mercy Retirement & Care Center. As one elder talked about her life experiences she repeatedly referenced the ways art, activism and public speaking help her.
