As we’re packing our bags to head to Albuquerque, we want to remind our attendees of a few details and share some exciting advocacy opportunities happening at the conferee. The 48th Annual Conference will be the second largest conference in the AATA’s history, with more than 1200 attendees and over 230 educational sessions covering a wide range of professional interests in art therapy. This year the AATA has increased momentum in our state licensure efforts – four bills passed in 2017 legislative sessions! – and strengthened our partnerships with advocacy organizations in the arts and mental health communities.

Audrey Sanchez found her way to the art therapy profession following her experience as an art teacher in Miami for six years, working with children ages 6 to 12. Presently a first year student in the Graduate Art Therapy Program at Florida State University, Audrey is interning at Pediatria Healthcare for kids in Tallahassee. For Audrey, art therapy is effective because art transcends languages and creates a common ground for clients to feel comfortable expressing themselves non-verbally. Within art therapy, social justice, diversity, and advocacy are very important to Audrey. As the proud daughter of two immigrants from Peru and Cuba, diversity in this career path is significant to her because she would like to help reach diverse communities with educational opportunities in art therapy.

In response to member feedback and with the goal of increasing attendance at the Annual Meeting of the Membership (AMM), the meeting will be held on a new day and at a new time this year. These changes resulted in expanded conference educational offerings and an expanded resolutions process. The choice to move the meeting arose from a deliberative process and was approved by the AATA Board in September of 2016, and the Board will be seeking feedack from the membership about the success of the changes.

We extend our thanks to all of those individuals, chapters, and organizations who have already joined as fundraisers and donors to “Art Therapy Relief for Our Communities.” By mobilizing resources through our local chapters, we hope to fund art therapy-based services and events for children, adults, and communities impacted by these life-changing circumstances. The campaign will continue through the end of the month, culminating on this year's Giving Tuesday, the national day of giving, on November 28, 2017.

"I feel more at peace with everything if that makes sense. It is not like all of a sudden it is better. But I have more tools and know what to do with it and I have support systems like this to get through the hard times and to be able to develop my repertoire of tools to get through those things as they come," said Heather, a U.S. Air Force Veteran.
