The gasoline tax is running on fumes.
For decades, the excise tax on gasoline and diesel fuel has been the main source of funds for building and maintaining the nation's roadways. It has paid for most of the 4 million road miles currently in service. But now there is agreement across the political spectrum that the gas tax is broken and needs to be replaced, or at least overhauled.

American Airlines has canceled nearly 300 flights recently and things may get worse. On a normal day, an airline has approximately 100 delays; recently American Airlines had 547 delays. So far in September, the on-time arrival rate has dropped to 54 percent from 74 percent in August. And it's not just the pilots. Pantuso testifies at Congressional hearing on Amtrak subsidies

American Bus Association President and CEO Peter Pantuso told members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on Sept. 20, that motorcoach transportation in the United States continues strong year-to-year growth and remains exceptionally competitive against other modes of transportation, especially considering that Amtrak remains heavily subsidized by the federal government.

The American Bus Association is pleased to announce that its board of directors concluded a successful and productive fall meeting in Cape Cod, Mass., the week of Sept. 17. ABA staff and several board members also held a successful ABA on the Road event, inviting tourism and travel professionals to discuss important issues and trends in the motorcoach, tourism and travel industry. The ABA Foundation also held a successful fundraiser in Yarmouth on the Cape.

Access Board to meet on pending ADA guidelines for OTR buses and vans

The Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board is holding an informational meeting in Seattle on Oct. 2 on a pending rulemaking to revise and update accessibility guidelines for buses, over-the-road buses and vans. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss issues related to the design and slope of bus ramps and the space needed at the top of ramps by wheelchair users to access the farebox and to turn into the main aisle.

This meeting is an excellent opportunity to showcase your destination or property to 50 tour operators who will bring groups back to your facilities. The summit, which brings tour operators together to improve business prospects through education and networking, is in its third year. Proposals are due Oct. 1.

In this month's edition of Motorcoach Travel News, ABA tallies the votes and announces the Top 100 Events in North America for motorcoach groups. Plus, the ABA Foundation recently released its annual census of the motorcoach industry. We'll take a look at the numbers and see how Wi-Fi on motorcoaches may be drawing more passengers.
In safety news, ABA President and CEO Peter Pantuso discusses Marketplace and a new, exclusive one-day program that ABA and the National Transportation Safety Board will be offering for motorcoach company officials when we meet in Charlotte, N.C., in January. ABA's Pre-trip Passenger Safety Video is also being updated, and we are taking orders now.
With your help, the Jessica Ghawi Scholarship continues to grow. The scholarship started in late July after the death of Ghawi and 11 others in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting. Ghawi is the daughter of longtime ABA member Sandy Phillips of San Antonio. We'll have updates on these stories and more in this month's edition.
