ABA announces Marketplace 2015 and 2016 host cities: St. Louis and Louisville, Ky.

ABA is pleased to announce that St. Louis, Mo., has been selected to host ABA's Marketplace 2015, Jan. 10-13, 2015, at the America's Center convention complex. The following year, Louisville, Ky., will host Marketplace on Jan. 9-12, 2016, at the Kentucky International Convention Center. Both cities are first-time hosts for Marketplace, the motorcoach, travel and tourism industry's premier annual business and networking show. They follow Marketplace 2013, this Jan. 5-9 in Charlotte, N.C., and Marketplace 2014 in Nashville on Jan. 17-21 of that year.

New York Sen. Charles Schumer has called for national standards for GPS devices in response to a growing problem of trucks striking low bridge underpasses. At a news conference near exit 18 on the Southern State Parkway on Long Island, the New York Democrat said the devices do not recognize whether they're being used in a car or a truck. Tax break for tour operators

Tour operators who bring in at least 750 foreign tourists or handle a minimum of 1,500 local tourists each year will enjoy an income tax exem­ption for up to three years. The exemption is in addition to a 42 percent increase in government allocation for the development of the tourism industry. Najib said the allocation of RM358mil was in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2013/2014, for which 26.8 million tourist arrivals have been targeted. More

The economic recovery remains sluggish, but that isn't stopping tourists from visiting the United States. Tourism is on pace to set a record in 2012, as tourism and related sales increased by 2.1 percent in the second quarter, after a 4.9 percent increase in the first quarter, according to a recent report from the U.S. Department of Commerce. Travel and tourism-related activities also increased, on average, more than $1.1 billion a month during the first seven months of 2012, the agency reported separately. More

TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site, announced the results of its social media travel survey of more than 1,700 U.S. respondents. The findings reveal a strong correlation between social media and travel, as 76 percent said they share travel experiences via social networks. Forty-two percent use social channels for travel planning, while 40 percent do so for travel inspiration. Sixty-four percent most often refer to a travel research site such as TripAdvisor for travel inspiration. More

As airport security 'precheck' plans grow, lines could shrink

More fliers soon will find relief from the hassles at airport security lines. The Transportation Security Administration's "precheck" program that lets passengers keep their shoes and belts on through security has expanded to 26 airports in its first year and will continue to grow. Since it was launched in October 2011, 2.7 million passengers have been screened though a dedicated precheck security lane, says TSA spokesman David Castelveter. The TSA expects 35 airports to have precheck by the end of 2012. More

Revision to Top 100 Events list

Since the publication of ABA's 2013 Top 100 Events in North America list, the dates for the 2013 Buffalo Roundup in Custer State Park, S.D., have changed. The annual event has been moved to Sept. 27 for the Buffalo Roundup and Sept. 28-29 for the arts festival. Moving forward, the event will take place on the last Friday of September.
