Obama, Romney steer clear of auto bailout, transportation funding in debate

President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney largely avoided talk of the 2008 and 2009 bailouts of the U.S. auto industry, which have played a central role in their contentious campaign, in their first debate in Denver.
Obama has repeatedly used Romney's opposition to the $80 billion that was loaned to General Motors and Chrysler in 2008 and 2009 to paint the former Massachusetts governor as out of touch with working class voters.

National Archives marks anniversaries with new exhibits

The 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation will be commemorated by the National Archives in Washington, D.C., with a free special display of the original document from Dec. 30 to Jan. 1.
Marking the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis, a new exhibition, "To the Brink: JFK and the Cuban Missile Crisis," will open in D.C. on Oct. 12 and will run through Feb. 3. It then travels to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston from April 12 to Nov. 11, 2013.
Annual ADA reports due from all motorcoach operators by Oct. 29

Under ADA regulations, over-the-road bus companies must submit three types of reports annually by the last Monday of every October, including an Annual Summary Report of Accessible Service Requests, Annual Lift Use Summary and an annual report of OTRBs purchased/leased and overall fleet data.

Jack Pharr of Mint Hill passed away Sept. 16. He was 94 years old. He was born in Belmont, Miss., Oct. 23, 1917, one of 11 children. During his life he was part of the CCC program until finding work in North Carolina as a bus driver.

Citing U.S. Census data, Stan Turkel reports that there are currently more Americans ages 65 and older than at any other time in history.

Hotel owners in the United States are increasing their spending on improvements to their properties this year, upgrading guest rooms, restaurants, technology and other amenities. A new survey of owners estimated that spending would reach $5 billion this year, the most since 2008 and up from $3.75 billion last year. Capital expenditures fell to $3.3 billion in 2009 in the depths of the recession and dropped further to $2.7 billion in 2010.

The Northwest Motorcoach Association, which serves motorcoach companies in Washington, Oregon and Idaho, recently concluded its 13th annual convention and "Roadeo" in Richland, Wash.
Meeting Oct. 2-4, the group discussed the state of the group travel industry in the Pacific Northwest; conducted association business, including the appointments of new board members; and celebrated their annual Driver Roadeo.

Williams's appointment was announced by James C. Duff, president and CEO of the Freedom Forum and CEO of the Newseum. The Freedom Forum, which operates the Newseum, champions the First Amendment as a cornerstone of democracy.

Oct. 29 is an important date for the American's with Disabilities Act. The law goes fully into effect and ABA will explain what it means to motorcoach companies.
For years in Washington, D.C., Greyhound has been headquartered at the First street, N.E. terminal. But in late September, Greyhound moves to historic Union Station where the huge facility will now truly be an intermodal transportation center, with Washington DC Metro, Motorcoaches, Amtrak, VRE and MARC rail all headquartered there. We'll have a report.
MTN will announce it will have a new sponsor and one minute regular feature. MCI joins the show with a regular report on the environmental benefits of riding on a motorcoach. This is now a monthly sponsored feature beginning in November. Welcome MCI.
