Scrutiny of CSA taken to the next level
Land Line    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The ever-increasing criticism of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's compliance enforcement program reached a tipping point recently when a pair of lawmakers called on the DOT's inspector general to initiate an audit on the program. The Comprehensive, Safety, Accountability program — dubbed CSA — drew heavy fire during a recent hearing of the House Subcommittee on highways and transit. And it wasn't the first time. More

Is Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood preparing for departure?
POLITICO    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood was on the road to retirement — but lately, he's dropped some hints about a possible U-turn. The Illinois Republican has left his mark at the transportation department, from standing up for the administration's stimulus in the face of heavy criticism to making distracted driving a national safety priority. So last year, when he told the Chicago Tribune that he'd leave after President Barack Obama's first term, it wasn't a major surprise. More

Tour operator failure — an old problem resurfaces
Chicago Tribune    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Recently, Club ABC Tours of Bloomfield, N.J., apparently folded, leaving customers and suppliers with little recourse. The word "apparently" is used because the company made no formal announcement. Instead, it just quietly disappeared; its website is no longer responding, and press reports indicate it isn't responding to any inquiries. It's safe to assume it's gone. And that means current customers' prepayments and deposits are probably lost, and some suppliers are likely left with unpaid bills. This failure raises two questions: What recourse do travelers have? And how can you avoid getting caught in a similar situation? More

Hotels encourage travelers to exercise outdoors
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Chris McGinnis travels with just a carry-on bag, which leaves little room for running shoes. When he wants to exercise during a trip, he takes long walks. He prefers burning calories while strolling through the Hudson River Park in New York or Runyon Canyon in Los Angeles. "It's just good to be outdoors after spending so many hours in offices or on trade show floors full of stale air," McGinnis said, Best Western's business-travel trends expert and a blogger at the company's travel site Youmustbetrippin.com. The hotel fitness center has gotten fancier in recent years. But for many road warriors, that doesn't matter. They'd rather exercise in the great outdoors. In a bid to win those travelers, hotels are starting to give them exercise options beyond the fitness center. More

    CharterBusConnect.com requests
ABA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In an effort to provide a service to potential customers of group transportation, CharterBusConnect.com promotes all bus operator members of the ABA. These efforts include tradeshow travel, advertising and marketing initiatives, and developing relationships with users of group transportation. One subject that is continually dealt with is the nonresponse of bus operators to request for charter quotes generated through CharterBusConnect.com. This really hampers our mission of providing new business opportunities to ABA bus-operator members and also discourages users from trusting ABA websites for future use. Please take the time to respond to all quote requests in a timely manner, even if you are letting the user know that you do not have the availability. If you think that your company is not receiving the requests for quotes or you would like to participate and start receiving quote requests, please contact CharterBusConnect.com at 866-644-1664, ext. 201.
